Collecting: Confessions & Obsessions

Let me start off by stating emphatically that I am NOT a packrat. The folks at GoodWill know my name, and my neighbor brings me some impressive checks every few months when I begin tossing some of the higher-end items OUT of my closet and let her sell it on Ebay.
That being said, I have, over the years, collected (and refused as of yet to part with) some odd collections of things.
I'm not an AVID collector, mind you... I'm not capable of sustained and focus interest in any one thing long enough to get obsessive about lifelong collecting. What I DO have, though, is a taste for quality... so these odd inclinations that have struck me over the years, and then passed, have resulted in some interesting, high quality collections of rather disperate types of things.
and I need to start parting with them... perhaps ebay? I think they are better (most of them) as gifts, actually... since so many are new or just "display" pieces...

Teacups and Moose
A high quality or antique teacup is a thing of beauty... displayed in my 3.5 acre mountain/country home in Black Forest,CO. Moose, too, mostly stuffed - and mostly by Boyd's Bears, did I collect over the years (click on the boy's list and search for "moose" under critters. They will come up with 132. I probably own half.) They both reflected the eclectic country charm of the knotted-pine woodwork of the house (hand-crafted by the former owner.) Here in MI, my home is more formal - my kitchen done in french country (grapes, wine motifs) and bedroom in british colonialism (bamboo, palm, worn leather, monkeys and elephants) so the moose are stacked high atop the bookshelves of my office and on the walls - and the teacups are carefully wrapped and stashed in a large kitchen drawer.
I can't seem to part with them.
Kidstuff
The boxes of a stored childhood reside downstairs, also... an Atari 2600 original, with the wood slats and 26 original games. Not worth much and doesnt play very well anymore... My stacks of Garbage Pail Kids and Wacky Packages (I might have more trouble parting with the latter) from the 80's. Additionally, though not being considered for the "parting", I have more Winnie-the-Pooh than Christopher Robin.

I share this with you as a catharsis. I need to say goodbye to some of these memories - or I won't have room to add anything new to my life. The cup with my name from my mother, or the Christmas Moose - these shall remain with me forever until they are passed along to grand children or broken by time. The raft has served me well.. but Buddha is right, there are things that I need to relenquish in order to make space for the future.

A side note - Happy Birthday to my ex-husband. I hope you, AM (his wife) and Peanut have a good time tonight! We are all getting old... arent we? *sigh*
